Healthy Active Living Project
The HALP Programme activities comprise of three main themes
Extreme ActivityThis theme will provide opportunities for young people, aged 11 - 16, to access ‘extreme activities' within their local environment and link to local community sports clubs. This will involve access to Siblyback Lake and Siblyback Junior Sports Club for water sports activities, and the provision of Extreme Golf to link with 3 local golf clubs (Looe, China Fleet and St Mellion). This programme will provide 12 weeks of activity for all 5 secondary schools in Caradon and will lead to a competition. The three focus watersports will be: Sailing, Kayaking and Windsurfing. Supported by South West Lakes Trust and Siblyback Junior Sports Club, participants will be encouraged to join the after school satellite club and the Saturday morning junior club. The Extreme Golf programme will involve the training of staff, teachers and AOTTs to deliver after school sessions. supported by the Golf Foundation, Extreme Golf sessions will be delivered for 6 weeks in each school, with at least 2 weeks of the programme being delivered at the golf club. Golf sessions will be provided by professional golfers from the club.
Feeling Good Looking Good (FGLG)FGLG is a 20 week programme targeted at Girls in Years 9 and 10, aged 14 - 16. Girls taking part in the pilot project in North Cornwall showed improved confidence, greater understanding of the need for physical activity linked to health and the ability to share their knowledge in a positive way with their peers. It culminated in the girls organising a festival for their local primary school and utilising the skills they have developed by providing a carousel of activities. The 20 week programme includes : 'Health and Beauty' - looking after yourself; 'TechnoGirls' - dance mats/Wii project;Trampolining; 'Festival planning' and fruit smoothies; delivery of a primary school ‘Feeling Good Looking Good' Festival; Gym Induction at local fitness suite.
At the end of the 20 week programme and in partnership with local leisure centres, we hope to provide a Gym pass to girls who have committed to the project for a six month period. This will enable and encourage the girls to continue to use the leisure centre facilities.
Street MovesThis project will focus on the delivery of a new and exciting activity ‘Street Surfing'. Delivered across the partnership, the project will increase participation and physical activity in a non-games based activity. Free taster sessions are currently being delivered across all secondary schools in Caradon to raise the profile of the sport and engage young people.
As part of this theme, we plan to provide ‘Street Dance' and ‘Jinga Fit' (which is based on Capoeria, a martial arts based dance form). A coach will provide sessions in each of the 5 identified schools and produce a DVD resource for AOTTs, sports leaders and teachers as a result of the project.
