North Cornwall Surf Festival

Outdoor Adventure Surf and Activity Festival

Despite cuts in funding to school sport, competition and school sport are still Alive and Kicking in North and East Cornwall.

Thanks to a huge response from local primary, secondary schools and community sports providers the former Callington School Sport Partnership has been redeveloped and will now be known as ARENA.

The first major event for ARENA took place on Friday 30th September at Widemouth Bay beach with the support of Outdoor Adventure. Over 250 pupils from 6 local secondary schools were involved in the 7th Outdoor Adventure Inter-Academy Surf and Activity Festival at Widemouth Bay Beach.

On the day there was 7 competitions running simultaneously, boys and girls elite surfing, Inter-Academy surfing, cyclo- cross, beach volleyball and girls football.

The surf event was mainly aimed at beginner/intermediate surfers as well as a small elite competition. The emphasis was on taking part and having fun. The conditions were perfect with excellent surf and great weather. Budehaven School won the team surf Tag competition, with the highest scoring boy in the event being awarded to Johnny Eldefield from Wadebridge School and the highest scoring girl being awarded to Clara Jones from Sir James Smith School, Camelford.

In the Elite event competition the standard was very high, Jobe Harris won the Elite boys competition and Emliy Currie won the Elite Girls.

The 2011 Beach Volleyball competition was excellent and 6 teams entered the competition which after a closely fought battle was won by Wadebridge School.

Girls Football had two competitions running these were Under 14 and Under 16, it was a tough competition in the heat, with the Under 14’s competition being won by Budehaven and the Under 16s winners were Wadebridge School.

The Cyclo cross event will took place in the field opposite the beach thanks to the kind permission of local farmer Mr Proudfort. This was a new and exciting event for this year which involved teams of six students competing against each other on a challenging course with the use of mountain bikes. The event was won by Launceston College, with fastest boy and fastest girl also being awarded to Launceston College, with outstanding times.

ARENA wishes to thank Outdoor Adventure, Hi-Life Surf Shop, Circle One, Volcom and Ocean & Earth for their support and sponsorship of this event.
