Following the success of The Great Bear Hunt in 2007, The Very Noisy Night in 2008 and The Very Lazy Ladybird last year, students at Budehaven Community School hosted a fun, practical experience and physical activity session, based on dinosaurs as described in the story “Bumpus, Jumpus, Dinosaurumpus” by Tony Mitton.
This took place over two days, Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th March 2010, in the Sports hall at Budehaven Community School. Over 320 three to five year olds, dressed up as dinosaurs, came with their carers to take part and make the story come to life. They jumped, ran, twizzled and rattled along with the dinosaur leaders; sludged their way through swamps and roared at every opportunity at the giant Tyrannosaurus Rex! Over 45 Budehaven students were involved including Child Care students, Junior, Community, Higher Sports and Dance Leader students who were responsible for the organisation and planning and running of the project . We even had our very own Budehaven Television Crew filming the event!
The Budehaven students must be congratulated for their excellent leadership skills which really shone through to create a “magical experience” for all those attending.
The incredible team work of staff and students to make it such a successful event was unquestionable!
Recognition should also go to the primary leaders and teachers for their work in the build up to the event – each setting had rehearsed and then performed a short dance to the chorus “Shake, Shake, Shudder through the sludgy old swamp!” and the costumes, masks and face paints were truly creative.
Jane Cann, Community Development Officer, commented “We were delighted with how the dinosaur theme really captured the imagination of the children and adults! All the children had completed a lot of preparation work before coming and we kept getting told ‘they can’t stop talking about it’ which was great to hear.
Mrs Denise May, Director of Sport and Assistant Head teacher said, “A combination of high quality artwork, music, dance, creativity and physical activity combined to enrich the experiences of the young children attending and was a testament to the commitment of the Budehaven students, under the expert guidance of Ms Talbot, Mrs Cann and Mrs Marshall. The partnership between the Budehaven Community School, Bude Children’s Centre and the pre-school nursery settings proved very rewarding and fruitful for all involved. It is hoped that the experience will continue to play an important role and have a positive impact for several weeks to come!
It was certainly a very colourful, imaginative event, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all and a delight to watch!
