Roadford hosts 4th Water Sports Activity Fest

Over 100 young people were involved in a Water Sports Festival at Roadford Lakes on Friday. This is the fourth year running that Callington School Sports Partnership and South West Lakes Trust have organised this exciting event.

The festival kicked off at 1.30pm with competitions in Sailing, Surf Skis, Kayaking, Raft Building, Climbing and this year for the first time mountain biking. Prior to the event South West Lakes Trust staff at Siblyback and Roadford had been training the young people in sailing. All competitors in sailing must have achieved a one Star award prior to the event so the pressure was on!!

In the Sailing and Kayaking events the youngsters were put through their paces under the watchful eye of the staff from South West Lakes Trust. They were set a number of challenges in which they had to demonstrate their skills. Looe Community School were awarded first place in the Kayaking, with the team from Callington Community College coming a close second. The training sessions at Roadford for Launceston College's team clearly paid off as they went on to win the event, with Saltash.net coming close second. Callington were awarded first place in the Surf skis event after a close fought battle against runners up Looe.

In the climbing event particpants were given a variety of activities to do on a mobile climbing wall. Launceston College climbed to victory in first place with Liskeard School gaining second place.

The raft building was an interesting event as many of the rafts that had been built did not last long once in the water!  The event turned into an open swim with Launceston College once again taking first place and Liskeard School gaining second place.

Mountain biking was a really popular event, all participants being given a course to complete, as well as a free course to run through the woods. The event was brilliant to watch, with Liskeard the evetual winners and Looe runners up.

Thanks must go to the South West Lakes Team at Roadford who worked very hard prior to the event and ensured the car park was completed and the event was a success on the day!
